Hot Club Sandwich Play for Discovery Dance at the Port Townsend Elks September 18th

Location:
Elks Lodge #317
555 Otto Street
Port Townsend, WA 98368

The Discovery Dance Club (formerly the Olympic Peninsula Dance Club) will open its 2015-16 dance season on September 18 with the dance rhythms of Hot Club Sandwich. The dance will begin at 8:00 p.m. at the Elks Lodge located at 555 Otto Street in Port Townsend. A free (with admission) dance lesson will begin at 7:00 p.m.

Fifteen years ago, with Seattle fast becoming a hub of Gypsy jazz resurgence, Hot Club Hot Club SandwichSandwich was founded by a handful of young string players with a love for Manouche swing and other vintage jazz, including other folkloric music of the era from around the world. Several years ago, Hot Club Sandwich added Ray Wood to the line-up, a guitar legend from Kitsap County who has been playing dances since the mid-50s. Founding members include Seattle’s Tim Wetmiller on violin and Matt Sircely on mandolin. Known for playing dances as far afield as California or Alaska, the group has made regular appearances in recent years on the Juan de Fuca Festival and NW Folklife stages. When playing dances, Hot Club Sandwich caters to each event, touching on swing at various tempos, and branching into country shuffles or Latin grooves before sprinkling the set with waltzes. Expect at least one polka, likely from Mexico.

A free (with admission) lesson in East Coast Swing will be offered at 7:00 p.m. by local dance instructor Janice Eklund. Experienced dancers are encouraged to come help beginners. Couples and singles are welcome. No partner or registration is necessary.

This is a smoke-free and scent-free dance open to all ages.

Admission: $10.
